Choosing a domain name
PDF Print E-mail

Domain names are the address that people type into the browser to go directly to your site.

The name needs to be as short as possible, distinct and memorable. If you already have a company name it may be available, others chose a different, catchy, abstract name.

One word of caution, if you chose a name that is similar or the same as another company, whether they are on the web or not, then you could have some problems later.

Buying a web name is easy and you may wonder why some companies charge just pence while others a few pounds.

The simple answer is renewals. It costs more to renew your domain name that to buy it and after the first few years when you come to renew, you could be in for a shock.

When you buy a domain name that is all you are buying. Think of it as an entitlement to use. But to actually get on and use it it has to be Hosted for you to be able to receive emails and have an area on the web people can view.

So the registration of the domain name is just that, registration of the name to say who the owner is, you then have to find someone to host the name if you want to use it.

You do not need to use the same company to buy the name to also host it.

So again do be careful, some companies tie you to there more expensive hosting when you buy a domain name.
